The following 12-day custom, scenic motorcycle and travel itinerary covers the best of Cambodia’s temples, rural Laotian mountains, and towns.This 12-day Easy Rider motorbike itinerary takes you from the ancient temples of Siem Reap, Cambodia, through the rugged mountains of northern Laos, ending in the cultural capital of Luang Prabang.This route balances dirt tracks, scenic mountain passes, and cultural immersion.

Terrain: Mostly flat, paved roads with options for sandy side trails.

Highlights: Leave early to ride north toward the Thai border. Ascend the steep Dângrêk Mountains to visit the remote, cliffside Preah Vihear Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site offering incredible views over the Cambodian plains.

Overnight: Preah Vihear town.

Distance: ~150 km

Terrain: Rural paved roads and packed red dirt.

Highlights: Ride through remote northern Cambodian villages. Cross the Mekong River via ferry or bridge into Stung Treng, a quiet riverside town close to the Lao border.

Terrain: Flat highways and scenic river roads.

Highlights: Complete border formalities at the Tropeang Kreal / Nong Nok Khiene border post. Enter Laos and ride straight to Champasak to visit Wat Phou, an ancient Khmer Hindu temple complex that predates Angkor Wat.

Overnight: Champasak town or Don Det (4,000 Islands).

Distance: ~130 km

Terrain: Winding paved mountain roads; cooler temperatures.

Highlights: Ride up into the volcanic Bolaven Plateau, famous for coffee plantations and massive waterfalls. Stop at Tad Fane (twin towering waterfalls) and Tad Yuang.

Overnight: Pakse or Paksong. 

Distance: ~320 km

Terrain: Long highway cruise on Route 13.

Highlights: A longer transit day heading north. The landscape transforms from flat plains into striking limestone karst formations as you approach Thakhek, the starting point of the famous Thakhek Loop.

Overnight: Thakhek. 

Distance: ~100 km

Terrain: Paved roads cutting through karst canyons; some gravel sections.

Highlights: Ride into the heart of the limestone mountains. Pass the "submerged forest" reservoir of the Nam Theun 2 dam.

Overnight: Thalang (stay at a rustic lakeside guesthouse).

Distance: ~150 km

Terrain: Winding mountain passes, followed by a flat valley dirt road.

Highlights: Ride to the spectacular Kong Lor Cave. Rent a longtail boat with a local guide to navigate the 7-kilometer-long underground river running entirely through the mountain.

Overnight: Kong Lor village.

Distance: ~280 km

Terrain: Highway 13 heading north; heavy traffic near Vientiane, turning into dramatic karst scenery near Vang Vieng.

Highlights: Bypass the main capital traffic to reach Vang Vieng, an adventure hub surrounded by towering limestone cliffs and turquoise lagoons.

Overnight: Vang Vieng.

Distance: 0–30 km (Local riding)

Terrain: Bumpy dirt tracks and wooden bridges.

Highlights: Give your muscles a break. Ride out to Blue Lagoon 3 or hike up Nam Xay Viewpoint for a 360-degree panoramic view of the valley. Enjoy a sunset drink by the Nam Song River.

Overnight: Vang Vieng. 

Distance: ~100 km

Terrain: Steep, twisting mountain asphalt with steep drop-offs (Route 13 North).

Highlights: An incredible, high-altitude mountain ride. Phou Khoun sits at a crossroads high in the clouds, famous for its strawberry farms and panoramic mountain viewpoints.

Overnight: Phou Khoun (or campsite over the valley).

Distance: ~130 km

Terrain: Tight switchbacks, steep grades, and dramatic mountain ridges.

Highlights: Ride the breathtaking Kasi Pass, widely considered one of the most beautiful motorcycle roads in Southeast Asia. Descend into the valleys leading toward the Mekong.

Overnight: Luang Prabang. 

Distance: ~60 km round trip

Terrain: Smooth, winding countryside tarmac.

Highlights: Celebrate the end of your journey with a morning ride to the multi-tiered, turquoise Kuang Si Falls. Spend your final afternoon exploring the night markets, colonial architecture, and temples of Luang Prabang.
